Chick Flick Review: Erin Brockovich

Hi guys,

So the next film to review is Erin Brockovich. This film is just amazing. I have watched this so many times and as I write this, I am sat watching it once again. I absolutely love Julia Roberts. I think her personality shines through whenever she is acting and she is just stunning. I have not seen a film with Julia Roberts in that I do not like!

Buy your copy here.
A lone woman, armed only with indomitable sass and her native wit, goes up against the corporate big boys and beats the bejesus out of them. As a story line it's hardly new, but Steven Soderbergh's film keeps it exhilaratingly fresh and lively--thanks not least to his lead actress. Seizing the role of the smart, mouthy, aggressively working-class Erin Brockovich with both hands, Julia Roberts gives it everything she's got and then some. She's well matched by Albert Finney as her grouchy but good-hearted boss and Aaron Eckhart as a sympathetic biker. The story's based--by all accounts fairly closely--on actual events, when the real Erin (who appears briefly in the film as a kindly waitress) brought a massive lawsuit against utilities giant Pacific Gas and Electric for spreading toxic pollution. Rather than confine the action to courtroom shenanigans, Soderbergh takes us out under Southern California's pitiless skies and along the dirt-poor roads where most of PG&E's blue-collar victims live, letting us feel the ground-down exhaustion of their lives. But though it's rooted in reality, the film's anything but solemn. The script's sharp and funny, full of unexpected twists; and Roberts, flaunting herself outrageously in an eye-popping array of push-up bras and micro-miniskirts, has never been better. --Philip Kemp

This film is based on a true story. It follows the story of Erin who is a single mother of three children and we meet her as she has a car accident and tries to sue the doctor who hit her. The lawyer who represents her says he won't lose, but she does. She then gets a job working with the lawyer, when she notices some strange anomalies in the paperwork when she is filing. We then follow her professional and personal life as she moves to solve the mystery of the Pacific Gas and Electric company and helps the families to achieve compensation for the health issues caused to them by toxic dumping in the water. I honestly cannot even tell you how good this film is. I love every minute of it and I watch it over and over again. It is one of those stories that you keep with you forever. The fight and the passion that Erin has for these total strangers make for amazing watching. I cannot tell you how important it is that everybody watches this film. It just might make everyone a little nicer to others.

Chick flick review: 50 first dates

Hi guys,

So today's movie is 50 first dates. This film is about a woman who has short term memory loss. Basically, every day is a new day for her. This brings about quite a lot of comedic situations when Adam Sandler's character has to introduce himself to her every day. Drew Barrymore plays a good part too.

Buy yours here.

50 First Dates is a sweet-natured vehicle for sweet-natured stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, and their track record with The Wedding Singer no doubt factors in its lowbrow appeal. But while the well-matched lovebirds wrestle with a gimmicky plot (she has no short-term memory, so he has to treat every encounter as their first), director Peter Segal (who directed Sandler in Anger Management) ignores the intriguing potential of their predicament (think Memento meets Groundhog Day) and peppers the proceedings with the kind of juvenile humour that Sandler fans have come to expect. The movie sneaks in a few heartfelt moments amidst its inviting Hawaiian locations, and that trained walrus is charmingly impressive, but you can't quite shake the feeling that too many good opportunities were squandered in favour of easy laughs. Like Barrymore's character, you might find yourself forgetting this movie shortly after you've seen it. --Jeff Shannon

I enjoyed the film sometimes and it makes you smile, although I wouldn't say it was one of the best I seen. I sometimes think Adam Sandler, while talented and very funny, makes light of situations. A very strange ending to a film that stays with you for a while after watching. Worth a watch, let me know what you thought if you have seen it.

Chick flick review: 10 things I hate about you

Hi guys,

So day one on the chick flick review! The first film I want to review is 10 things I hate about you featuring Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger (loved him!).

Buy yours here.
This is the Amazon Review/Product Description ...

It's, like, Shakespeare, man! This good-natured and likeable update of The Taming of the Shrew takes the basics of Shakespeare's farce about a surly wench and the man who tries to win her and transfers it to modern-day Padua High School. Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles) is a sullen, forbidding riot girl who has a blistering word for everyone; her sunny younger sister Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) is poised for high school stardom. The problem: overprotective and paranoid Papa Stratford (a dryly funny Larry Miller) won't let Bianca date until boy-hating Kat does, which is to say never. When Bianca's pining suitor Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) gets wind of this, he hires the mysterious, brooding Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) to loosen Kat up. Of course, what starts out as a paying gig turns to true love as Patrick discovers that underneath her brittle exterior, Kat is a regular babe. The script, by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, is sitcom-funny with peppy one-liners and lots of smart teenspeak; however, its cleverness and imagination doesn't really extend beyond its characters' Renaissance names and occasional snippets of real Shakespearean dialogue. What makes the movie energetic and winning is the formula that helped make She's All That such a big hit: two high-wattage stars who look great and can really act. Ledger is a hunk of promise with a quick grin and charming Aussie accent and Stiles mines Kat's bitterness and anger to depths usually unknown in teen films; her recitation of her English class sonnet (from which the film takes its title) is funny, heartbreaking and hopelessly romantic. The imperious Allison Janney (Primary Colors) nearly steals the film as a no-nonsense guidance counsellor secretly writing a trashy romance novel. --Mark Englehart

I love Kat's character in this movie. She always has this hard face on and acts very cold. I think when watching the film, even though she comes across as cold, you like her instantly; a lot more than her sister. It is a very funny film and it makes for easy watching. There is a bit of a weepy part to the film as well when joking about feelings becomes too real. The English teacher totally steals the show with his comedic relationship with Kat. I will 100% recommend this film and you will definitely enjoy it. It is hilarious!

Product Review: Garnier Ultimate Blends

Hi guys,

I bought the Garnier Ultimate Blends Sleek Restorer Shampoo and Conditioner in my haul last week and I have used it several times since then. I have worn my hair up, straight and curled since I have used this product.

I have had no frizzy bits at all which I am really pleased about. It smells lovely with the coconut oil and cocoa butter, the smell doesn't last though. I am really looking forward to having frizz free hair for a while and hope it lasts.

The conditioner is amazing too. My hair was so soft after using it and not too soft that I couldn't curl it after. Just an amazing product. I also bought this when it was half price too, get yours from Boots. They also do a hair oil and a one minute treatment (all on offer at the minute!!)

See you soon,

Steal her style: Audrina Patridge

Hi guys,

So the final The Hills steal her style look ... Audrina!

I like Audrina. Audrina is the coolest of the MTV The Hills cast when it comes to fashion, her style is very laid back, sometimes grungy, but everything she wears shows off her AMAZING figure! Audrina's style isn't mine, but I would wear some of her outfit options. I chose this one below as this is the one I am most likely to wear from her style!

I like that this look is pretty. I would definitely wear this. Audrina's look is very sexy but this is a more feminine look for her!

1. Top - Boohoo
2. Arm Cuff - Ebay
3. Heeled sandals - Missguided
4. Belt - Missguided
5. Jeans - Topshop

Shop this look now! Love this look!

Friday Book Review: Slated by Teri Terry

Hi guys,

So I have just finished reading this book and I have popped the next two on my wishlist on Amazon for "payday" purchases! I have been reading a lot of chick lit lately and so I saw this book looking at me on the shelf and I thought I would start to read it, but then I couldn't put it down. The book is Slated by Teri Terry.

Book Description

What would you do if your entire memory had been erased?

Product Description

Kyla's memory has been erased, her personality wiped blank, her memories lost for ever. She's been Slated. The government claims she was a terrorist, and that they are giving her a second chance - as long as she plays by their rules. But echoes of the past whisper in Kyla's mind. Someone is lying to her, and nothing is as it seems. Who can she trust in her search for the truth?

I am not doing any spoilers for any books, that is not what I want to do. I am just putting books out there that you may not have heard of or may not want to read, but ever the encourager, I want people to read and if reviewing a book or two and giving my opinion means others are going to read, then so be it.

Okay, so this book starts with the main character, Kyla, awaiting the arrival of her parents to come and collect her from a hospital. What we then find out is that Kyla has been "slated", the government's form of punishment to terrorists or criminals under sixteen, the cut off age for the treatment. She is then released to her parents, who are in fact, not her real parents. They are the adopted parents that the hospital find for her to go and live with. As she navigates herself through the uncharted territory of school and adapting to life, she has another challenge to face. Everyone who is Slated, wears a band called a Levo, this measures how happy or angry you are, and if it dips below a certain level, the levo will fry your brain.
You find yourself liking the character and you root for her throughout the book, you don't want to see her get hurt. I think it doesn't matter what she did before she was slated, we feel that we don't need to know that as much as she does, because we like who she is now. It is always interesting to see how the future changes with different author's perspective. I wonder what the world will really be like in the 2030s.
The imagination that has gone into this book matches that of The Hunger Games and The Dust/Wool/Shift books. It is so well written and when I finished reading the book, it made me want more. I couldn't put the book down. It is part of the books with bite website, this pushes you onto different books that you may like if you enjoyed this one. Well worth a look.
Get yours here!
Enjoy, Rachael xox

Product Review: Soap and Glory Flake Away Body Scrub

Hi guys,

So many times I use a product over and over again and I just don't get round to shouting from the rooftops about it. Recently, I realised that I use this product over and over again. This is The Soap & Glory Flake Away Body Scrub. When I buy Soap and Glory, I usually just go for the travel size, because then I get to use the product and if I don't like it, I don't panic over the money I have wasted. £2.50 is not bad to be wrong about a product.

This product is amazing. I love the smell, I like the consistency, I feel like it really gets in there and takes away all of the dead skin and it really makes a difference if I use this over something else when tanning afterwards. I have terrible feet too, I am on my feet all day so they are quite hard and I have a lot of dry skin but this seems to make a difference to them as well! I feel as if it didn't do such a good job, I would still use it because it smells so good.

Overall, a good product and next time I buy, I'll go big! You can get yours here!

Rita Ora Rimmel 60 seconds ...

Hi guys,

So, I went to Boots the other day with the sole purpose of purchasing some of the Rita Ora nude coloured nail polishes. Rita Ora has got a gorgeous nail polish range for Rimmel 60 Seconds and they all have really cool bedtime names!

The colours I picked up were Lose your Lingerie, Let's Get Nude and Pillow Talk. I just love the names. There are a lot of neon colours in the range but I have been trying to go pastel lately so I bought the lighter shades.

This shade is Pillow Talk. I love it. It is very thick and a bit gloopy, but I think it has to be this consistency to create such a pigmented colour. The colour is amazing and I got loads of compliments on it, people saying it is such a pretty colour. I just love it. I tried Let's Get Nude also since then (didn't take a photograph as it was on my toes yuk!) but I found that that one needed a lot of layers to create the same look as the fingernails.

I would definitely recommend this polish and I will be wearing Lose your lingerie next so I will be popping a photo on too if I remember!

Also, if I forgot to mention that when I bought these they were only £3.69 from Boots and they were three for two! BARGAIN!

See you soon xox

Steal her style: Lauren Conrad

Hi guys,

So the first steal her style from The Hills is Lauren Conrad. Lauren's style is very simple, understated but it always looks so classy and well put together. I always find her style just stunning, yet it looks effortless. Her biggest style staple I would say is her Chanel handbags. The word I would use overall to describe her style is Polished!

So here is my pick of the bunch. Her look here is just so put together and seamless, but simple ..

1. Blouse - Matalan
2. Skirt - Topshop
3. Necklace - Topshop
4. Satchel - Missguided
5. Shoes - Missguided

So, there is my Lauren Conrad steal her style look .. if you wanted to do it top to toe too, a possible matching nail shade is below ...

Rimmel 60 seconds (Electric Blue)
See you next time guys xox

Boxset Review: Dark Angel

I love fantasy, Sci-Fi and all supernatural type books, TV series and films! I used to watch Dark Angel on TV in dribs and drabs when there was nothing else on and I kind of liked it but I didn't really follow the storyline.

Recently, I found both series' in a charity shop and decided to give them a go. I loved it.

So the story basically follows Max (Jessica Alba), who is 19 years old in a post-apocalyptic Seattle. It starts in the year 2019 and it follows Max as she tries to make her living as a courier and also as a genetically modified mutant. She was born in a test tube along with other "transgenics" at a government institution named Manticore with perfect DNA and trained to be the perfect soldiers. They escaped from Manticore. when they were just ten years old. In 2009, terrorist released an electromagnetic pulse above the USA, disabling all communications systems which results in what we see as the series starts in 2019.

If I get the negatives out the way first, I thought the series dragged out a lot. I am very impatient and like to get to the bottom of things, so if you are like me you probably want to fast forward some of the slower parts. Also, watching Jessica Alba for hour after hour in black leather, makes you reach for the carrot sticks instead of the chocolate. A positive for me, but a negative for the hours you will spend in front of the mirror pouting trying to achieve her lips. Trust me, I've put the hours in!

What I love about Dark Angel, is that there are such strong characters in the entire series. You grow to appreciate the characters in their own way and even love some of them. Series 2 switched it up a bit, answering a lot of unanswered questions and introducing an even darker side to the whole genetics mutation and also the release of the transgenics on to society. You also get to see Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) looking a lot younger but still as buff. The last episode "Freak Nation" was epic, but it definitely left me wanting more, not a lot of TV series can do this for me. Unfortunately, it was cancelled after series 2, but I definitely recommend both series 1 and 2 for a great show.

If you do watch it, and you love it as much as I do, they brought out books to follow up - I have found both on Amazon; Dark Angel: Skin Game and Dark Angel: After Dark.

Hope you enjoy,
Rachael xox

Cinema Room ...

Hi guys,

So I wanted to share my "cinema room". When we moved into our home, we realised we had three reception rooms and we knew we wanted a formal style living room for when guests come round and a dining room also, so we were left with this quite big space that we didn't know what to do with. We have always enjoyed watching movies, we have rather a large collection of films, tv boxsets etc. and this is how we unwind when not at work or out and about. The hubby will look online or study and I blog or shop online. We are multi-taskers definitely but it is just how we chill.

Anyhoo, since we were going the whole hog, I decided to go Hollywood style.

Avengers Poster - Grainger Games

Hollywood Wallpaper - Paper Mill, Hartlepool

Hulk toy - Charity shop, Captain America - handmade in Mexico

Home studios clapperboard - The Range

Superman - handmade in mexico, Iron Man toy - charity shop

TV - wedding gift (Currys?), Bookcases - Argos

Marilyn Monroe Picture - Poundstretcher

Love my cinema room!

Have you done anything to a room in your house to make it super special?? x

Friday Book Review: Room by Emma Donoghue

Hi guys,

I don't know what I want to say about this book, which is one of the strangest books I have ever read, and I have read a lot of books.

Amazon Description:
"A number-one bestseller, Room was published in 2010 to ecstatic reviews around the world and quickly became a word-of-mouth sensation. It has won or been shortlisted for more than a dozen awards (including shortlistings for both the Man Booker Prize and the Orange Prize) and has sold more than a million copies. It's Jack's birthday, and he's excited about turning five. Jack lives with his Ma in Room, which has a locked door and a skylight, and measures 11 feet by 11 feet. He loves watching TV, and the cartoon characters he calls friends, but he knows that nothing he sees on screen is truly real - only him, Ma and the things in Room. Until the day Ma admits that there's a world outside . . . Told in Jack's voice, Room is the story of a mother and son whose love lets them survive the impossible. Room is the story of Ma and Jack. They live in a single, locked room. Five-year-old Jack loves watching TV, but he knows that nothing he sees on the screen is truly real – only him, Ma and the things in Room. Until the day Ma admits there’s a world outside . . . "

Room is the story of a young boy called Jack who lives in a room with his mum. He basically has nothing else to do apart from watch the TV and watch things he thinks are not real. The story is told completely from the child's perspective which gives an innocent tone in the beginning, but then the story reveals a very sinister twist. It is one of those books that you need to sit and read in one sitting, leaving the doors open and the lights on. I have to say that this is one of the best books I have ever read and I am not usually surprised in the way books go and how they turn out, but this is one of the best.

Definitely a must-read!

Buy your copy here.

Hope you enjoy,

Rachael xox

I HEART The Hills ...

Hi guys,

I must pledge my absolute love for The Hills. I loved Laguna Beach and I then went onto watch the Hills after. Lauren Conrad is one of my style icons. I love how she always looks so effortless. Not only that, she is an amazing person.

I have watched all of The Hills before but I am making my way through them again series by series, I have just started season 5 out of 6. I cannot get enough. I don't know whether its the fashion, the constant nights out or the passive aggressive stares amidst the drama.

So .. The Hills has prompted me to do a style series featuring the main characters and how you can style yourself like them. If you haven't watched any of the Hills or Laguna Beach, then you need to get a copy now. It is amazing. There are loads on Ebay, you can even get the full boxset here on Amazon, which includes Laguna Beach and The City (Whitney Port's spin off).

Product Review: Garnier Moisture Match

Hi guys,

I have got a product review for you. I have been using the Garnier Moisture Match Shine be Gone Mattifying fresh cream for about four weeks now. Every morning, I use this before putting on my usual makeup. It says it should keep you shine clear.

Well, I am very sorry to disappoint but every day come 1pm, I have had to pop some powder on my face as I am glowing like a beacon. I do have combination skin. Sometimes it can be quite dry, sometimes it is extremely oily. However, this cream seems to bring out the worst in my skin. I have persevered but I am sorry, this product just does not work for me. Has anybody else tried it out there? Does anybody have a product that works better than this?

River Island Pacha Range ...

Hi guys,

River Island's Pacha range is hot! I have been looking online at summer jollies for the simple excuse to purchase this lot below and don it all poolside. Every piece is as striking as the next but I think my favourite is the pink hooded kaftan. Love it! If you like what you see, I suggest you click add to basket sooner rather than later as I don't think they are going to last very long.

I just need a large straw hat and sunnies and I am ready!

See you soon xox

Soap and Glory: Trick and Treatment

Hi guys,

So I have been using this concealer for quite a while now and I cannot believe I haven't reviewed it yet. I actually got this given off a friend because she didn't think it worked for her. It is the soap and glory trick and treatment for dark circles. I do suffer with dark circles and I have never really found anything to combat them. It just normally looks like I have dark circles with makeup on the top of it.

This trick and treatment concealer is amazing. I put on my foundation as usual and I then put on the concealer on top - you have to be careful to only use two light dabs as too much can turn it a funny colour as it has a yellow pigment in it. I put on a limited amount and then rub it in with my fingers. It leaves a dewy glowing look to my eye.  Also, I find that it actively works to help get rid of my dark circles, not just cover them.

10/10 product for me and I will definitely be repurchasing it!

You can grab one from Boots for £9.00

See you soon xox
